CASE STUDIES

CHERNOBYL, UKRAINE

In 26 April 1986 approximately at 1 am in Ukraine (UTC + 3), reactor 4 in Chernobyl suffer catastrophic power increase which resulted in explosion to the core. Due to explosion, millions of the radioactive particles disperse to the atmosphere, which changed from lovely city to dead city. It called the dead city because the radioactive particle in the area was too concentrated for human to live. Everything in Chernobyl was contaminated by radioactive particle. Like people, building or even water.

As people exposed with high level of radioactivity particles and drink water from a contaminated river, it may alter the basic genetics information of an offspring.

LINFEN, CHINA
Nearly 80 percent of household sewage and about one third of industrial waste water is released without any treatment. Nearly 85 percent of china cities didn’t have any sewage treatment. As a result they waste everything to the river, half of the population threaten lack of safe drinking water. The polluted water in china contain fluorine, sulfate and dangerous level of arsenic which is a dangerous substances for carbon based life form. About 500 millions life use the water that contaminated by both human and industrial waste.

A 2011 surveyed stated that the contamination of china has doubled because government overlooks the agriculture waste, which apparently has a bigger potential to caused pollution than industrial waste. As people dump untreated sewage to the river, the river will bring the sewage to the sea. A high concentration of toxin in water can be resulted in the dead of marine life.

KABWE ZAMBIA
Kabwe is the second largest city after Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. In 1902 people found a huge deposit of lead in Zambia. The ore of lead contain silicates oxides and carbonate. Then uncontrollable mining process occurs from 1902 until 1994 without any government warning of lead. The mining process release a lot of heavy metal in dust particle which later settle down in the ground. Even though the mining activities and facilities were shut down, the aftermath of these activities leaves wounds that may will never be healed to the surrounding resident. The lead particles seem to fall on water and make the water poisonous. Later the studies revealed that the resident of kabwe showing the symptom of acute blood poisoning which occur above level 20 (in America it must not exceed 10). Also, the studied stated that the cause of this symptom is water that has been contaminated by lead particles.

NORILKS, RUSIA
Norilks is industrial city located in the north of Russia. It is officially founded in 1939 as a slave labor camp. As a industrial country Norilks posses a lot of factory foe example like the factory manufacture a lots of chemicals compound platinum. As a result Norilks release a lot of cadmium, selenium, arsenic and other poisonous elements. It is said that Norilks is so polluted that the eternal white snow fall as black snow. The air tht the resident inhale is contaminated with sulfur. According to a research that has been done in Russia stated that the lifespan of the workers in Norilks is 10 years shorter that in other part of Russia. Due to high level of toxicity that not only affect the water but also the soil, no sign of green life forms that have witness alive within the range of 30 miles.

SUKINDA, INDIA
Sukinda, India, is a place that has of the largest hexalavent chromium in the world. Hexalavent chromium is one of the ingredients to make stainless steel. Hexalavent chromium is very dangerous to human as it caused carcinogenic if inhaled or ingested. There are 12 mine in Sukinda that is continue operate without any environment management plan. In each day uncountable and untreated waste water from the mine is discharge trough the river which caused 70 % of surface water and 60% ground water is contaminated. Miners exposed to highly concentrated poisonous dust suffers from intestine bleeding, asthma and tuberculosis which apparently is common. Also the offspring of the resident of one village in near “ground zero” shows a lot of physical defection that after investigated reveal that it is the cause of the poisonous air that has been inhale and the poisonous water that has been consume
